Vacation Netiquette

You finally are able to go on that long-planned vacation. You deserve it for working hard! You decide to leave the laptop behind and announce that “no work allowed during the break”. Fine. But are you really going to disconnect from your world and NOT go online at all? This is unlikely, I say. With the advent of smart phones, WiFi and 3g, I am sure you will not be able to resist checking your mail or at least posting a photo or a status in Twitter or Facebook! Will you?

In those times that you are unable to resist the urge to shout out, here are some reminders to avoid being the annoying office person (remember, there are those left in the work hole!). They say there is a fine line between sharing a wonderful vacation and going overboard in rubbing-in that you are actually enjoying the sun!

  • Share pictures wisely a.k.a. Do not share 10 identical pictures in an album! Avoid uploading every single snap and only share the relevant ones. You would want viewers to experience your vacation through pictures and who would wish to go through 15 shots of your father standing by the entrance of the resort? Also, try to arrange the photos chronologically.
  • Create a guidebook via location sharing. While a lot of people (including me) are hesitant to use location-sharing apps, privacy settings can be edited so only people you really know are able to see your whereabouts. Your Facebook and Twitter contacts won’t be too interested to read blow by blow wall updates, would they?
  • Let people you’re gone. Word your out of office email reply properly that clients and colleagues will “get” that you are indeed out of town. Post a non-annoying FB status or send a mass email, telling your friends where and how they can contact you, in case.

Have fun!

About Me :)
Hi, I am Kelly G. and I am glad you are here! I believe that information and knowledge is power. My campaign, crusade, goal, mission or whatever you would like to call it is to disseminate information (and world domination…just kidding!). This is why I started this blog – that I may have the avenue to gather and share valuable lessons to anyone that may stumble upon this small nook in the world wide web.
