Empty Calories and How to Avoid Them
The term itself sounds bad. Empty calories means high calorie content but nutritional value is low. Junk food takes the number one spot when pinpointing samples of empty calories.
The following are samples of food that has low in nutrition but high in calories:
- French fries, fried chicken, chips and all other deep-fried foods – for instance a large order of fries contain up to 570 kcal with a whopping 30g of total fat and 8g of trans fat!
- Candy, pop and other sweetened packaged foods – a can of soda may contain up to 130kcal plus additives and coloring.
- Beer, wine and all other alcoholic beverages – beer has 150kcal from sugar and may also lead to “beer-belly”.
- Refined grains such as crackers, cookies, white rice and white bread
You can avoid empty calories by avoiding deep-fried food and sweetened & canned drinks. Also try whole grains rather than refined grains. Lastly, snack on fruits instead of grabbing that box of crackers.
