Kelly Campaign goes national
Web site and Prime Minister petition in place
The Full Justice for Kelly campaign to stop drunk drivers serving their driving ban whilst still in prison has now gone national.
A web site promoting and giving background to the campaign is now up and running and an on-line
petition to Prime Minister Gordon Brown linked to the site attracted more than 2,000 signatures in its first week. A paper based
petition has also grown quickly with pubs. Clubs and shops all playing their part in gathering signatures.
Now Jan Woodward who lost her daughter Kelly when she was killed due to the negligence of a drunk driver, is hoping that people throughout the country will visit the web site, sign the on-line
petition and encourage everyone they know to do so too.
"We have got to keep the campaign moving on - the fact so many people signed so quickly before we even publicised the web site and the on line
petition, is evidence that most will support what we are trying to do," said Jan.
"I only hope now that people throughout the country will send the link to the web site and the
petition to everyone they know who has an e-mail address and help us maximise signatures as quickly as possible."
Jan, who lives in Windlestone Road in Billingham, is angry that the drunk who killed her, could walk out of prison and back into the driver's seat of a car within just a few months.
She has already succeeded in fighting for the 30 month prison sentence imposed on Andrew Burrell, to be increased to four and a half years and his driving ban extended to five years. But she knows that under the current law, he could be driving again within six months of leaving prison.
"Everyone I've spoken to agrees that this is bonkers - so we have to change the law if this nonsense is to be stopped. Next we plan to e-mail every MP in the country and get them to back us and bring the necessary pressure on the Government to make the change," said Jan.
