A Mother's Mission

Jan Woodward is the 50 years old mother of Kelly and lives in the Teesside town of Billingham in the northern part of the Borough of Stockton on Tees. She also has two adult sons, Lee and Wayne.

Her life was turned upside down in 2006 when 19 year old Kelly, a passenger in the back of a car, was killed instantly when the driver lost control and crashed.

Kelly and three friends had innocently accepted a lift home from a party from the driver who had only weeks before passed his driving test. But it led to tragedy.

The driver, 20 year old Andrew Burrell, also of Billingham, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and drink driving and was originally jailed for 30 months and given a driving ban.

An appeal by the prosecution to the Appeal Court saw the sentence increase to four and a half years and the driving ban to five years.

Now Jan is determined that Burrell and every other drunk who is jailed serves their driving ban in full.

"Its not just about full justice for Kelly - its about every drunk who kills or maims people and can serve their driving ban whilst in prison. That is not justice," said Jan.

She now hopes all families affected by such tragedies will join her campaign for a change in the law. "It is all very simple and straightforward to me - if you can't drive in prison, how could you possibly serve a driving ban?" said Jan.
